Strip Therapy

Sewing makes me happy. Sometimes I just want to sit at my machine and feed 2.5 inch strips through it without thinking. This was one of those weeks.

This week I just worked on an old UFO. This is Bonnie Hunter's Scrappy Trips Around the World. This is a free pattern on her blog. I started this project in a class with Bonnie at the Vermont Quilt Festival in 2012. No particular reason why this is still a UFO, except that it's for me, so not a priority to finish, so it got shoved by the wayside.

Below, I have 20 blocks finished. I want to make a total of 64, so 44 more to go.

All the fabrics in these blocks are batik. I did a batik strip swap with my Brown Bagger buddies several years ago, so most of the fabrics in this quilt are from that. As I sew, I enjoy looking at all the different fabrics and wondering what projects my friends used them in. It also expands my horizons because I get to work with colors that I might not normally choose, however I have set all the brown and beige strips aside (yuck!).

When I finish all my blocks I will play with them. I may color sort my quilt (many choices: from light to dark, in rainbow order) or I may leave it randomly delicious. It will be fun to play!

  5. What great color in this one! I really like the use of turquoise. I have days where I need mindless sewing too. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  6. Beautiful! I did a scrappy trip around the world quilt last April and gave it to Becca's college roommate. It didn't make (much) of a dent in my scraps but it was fun/easy to do!

  8. Love your version, I am about to start another from an Eleanor Burns book. Must make some room for anything that might jump into my hands at the Festival of Quilts.

  10. Ooh, lovely. I have projects, um plural, yes, like that: it's not that I no longer like them, just that others seems to take priority. Fun to pull them out, and I totally agree, sewing makes me happy!

  13. Very pretty! With 64 blocks it's going to be big, too. It's sad how we push aside the things we're making for ourselves, isn't it? (And I'd ditch the beige, too!)

  16. I also have a batik Scrappy Trip UFO! I think I was lacking contrast and lost interest, but now that I see your beauty, I'm thinking I will have to pull it out soon and rethink ;)
